Starting your day on purpose can change your life. They say the first hour of your day is the most important. They also say that how you start your day sets the tone for how the rest of your day goes. A couple years ago I would wake up every single Monday dreading the day and in a bad mood because I didn’t want to handle that week’s responsibilities and I just knew that because it was Monday it would be a hard day. Of course, I was right.

Whatever you believe when it comes to yourself and success usually turns out the be correct. The power of your thoughts is powerful. If you start your day in a negative way or with a negative mindset, your day is going to suck.

These days Monday is my favorite day of the week. I love Mondays because it’s like having an entirely new opportunity to be great at what I want to accomplish. Usually, Mondays are my most productive days where I get the most done and end the day on the best more.

So I can tell you from personal experience that if you switch to starting your day in a better way, your day will go a lot smoother. This is not something that happens overnight or by accident. It takes practice and actual work to accomplish this. So, how do you start your day on purpose? How do you start your day right to have the best day every day?

1. Do not hit the snooze button on your alarm

The very first thing you need to get into the practice of doing is getting up once your alarm goes off. You set your alarm for the time you feel you need to get up. So when the time comes, get up. You may think that you’re giving yourself extra sleep but you’re actually just confusing your body who has to go through the motions in order to wake up. Then you put it back at rest just to disturb it a few minutes later. It sours your mood because your sleep has been interrupted multiple times.

2. Do some form of meditation or a moment of gratitude

When the first thing you do on waking up is to spend some time in a spirit of gratefulness, you’ll be surprised how positive and capable you’ll end up feeling. Our first thoughts when we wake up set the mood that we will be in for the rest of the day. If you wake up feeling like a boss who grinds hard and gets things done, you’ll become that boss who grinds hard and gets things done.

If you wake up complaining, you will end up complaining about frivolous things all day. Why? Because you complained about WAKING UP that morning. Now ask yourself: how many people didn’t get that chance this morning? How many people don’t have the internet access to be reading this article right now? You are doing a lot better than you realize so focus on the good when you wake up and meditate with those thoughts in mind.

3. Morning exercise

Get moving when you wake up in the morning. How you do this is completely up to you. You can go on a walk or jog and breathe in that fresh air. You can do yoga (which is what I do) and stretch to get the blood flowing. Or you can do a full on workout. Being active as a start of your day is a good habit to have because exercise gives us energy and sets us up to want to keep moving throughout the day. You’d be surprised how energizing a good run outside can be.

4. Eat a good breakfast

The most important meal of the day is breakfast. We all hear it all the time and it is true. I can personally attest to there being a difference between how I feel when I have gotten up and eaten a good breakfast and how I feel when I starve myself until lunch. I never used to eat breakfast (around the same time I was hating Mondays) and now I don’t know why I made the conscious decision to starve myself until I am a bitter and angry person in the afternoon. You need nourishment for energy and as the Snicker commercial reminds us: we aren’t ourselves when we’re hungry.

5. Set intentions for the day

I am semi-new to the concept of setting your intention. It is kind of connected to meditation but a tad more specific. You have to definitely decide how your day is going to go. You can set the intention to be positive that day. You can set the intention to get a lot done that day with no distractions. Whatever you want your intention to be, write it down on paper, in your notes, or make an INTENTIONAL note in your head. This is a standard you set for yourself and deciding that positive things will transpire causes positive things to transpire.

6. Smile

This one may not make sense to some, but I started making an effort to smile in
the mornings for no reason. I smile at myself when I am in the bathroom getting ready. I
smile while I am in the kitchen cooking. I smile at every person I see no matter how early
in the morning it is.

When I started making this specific effort I found myself smiling
naturally because my body just wants to. I feel more positive and the smile no longer
feels like something I have to remind myself to do. I trick my brain into wanting to
positively react and interact with others at the very start of my day. If you wake up
smiling it’ll be hard to wipe that smile off of your face throughout the rest of the day.

7. DO NOT immediately check your phone.

This is a big one. The first thing we all tend to do is get on our phone and check our texts, emails, and social media. My biggest challenge to you is to avoid doing that in the morning. Give yourself a good hour before you check your notifications. In order to start your day on purpose, you can’t give other things and people the power of filling your first thoughts. Your emails can wait. Your texts won’t delete if they don’t get your attention first thing.

Start your day off with self control and intentional time with yourself to get your head straight for the day so that no matter what you see when you do check your phone the tone for your day is already set. None of these things are complex habit changes, but they are definitely not habits that can be formed overnight.

It took me months to consistently start feeding myself in the morning and I find that to be absurd, but bad habits are the hardest to break. Maybe it’s not that you’re not a morning person.
