Many theories have evolved to prove the existence of the US dollar, ultimately the most widely accepted explanations are the below two:

1) According to  the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, goes back to the Spanish peso which was the basic unit of America during 1700’s.

The Spanish American peso, also known as “Spanish dollar” or “piece of eight” in America, was initially represented as PS.  Later, as time evolved the symbol turned as the letter S was on top of P, which slightly resembles to the current symbol of US dollar – $.

The official dollar sign $  first appeared in print in 1800 and was widely used by everyone, which later became the standard symbol of the US dollar.

2) The other contrary explanation goes to the hand written dollar symbol, which most of them justify that it comes from the initials of the word U.S.A.

The letters U and S superimposed resemble the historical double-stroke dollar sign : the bottom of the ‘U’ disappears into the bottom curve of the ‘S’, leaving two vertical lines.

Money bags issued by the US Mint used a dollar sign with two vertical lines, which could have started as a monogram of ‘USA’.

In today’s digital era, cash is in decline and transactions are carried out only through electronic modes/cards. The only form that reminds us of the paper money is the currency symbol and US being one of the global business nation, its good that you know how did it get the symbol its owning today.

So now you know where does the current US dollar sign come from and the history behind it.
